Many people have said that Hot Cheetos have changed chip history forever. They’re spicy, crunchy, and overall delicious to some. And their past is extremely odd. Did you know that Hot Cheetos weren’t created by the Frito-Lay Company, but by their janitor?

Richard Montanez, who had been working for Frito-Lay Rancho since 1976, but he knew those plain old cheese Cheetos needed an extra kick. One day while he was watching someone make elote, he suddenly got an idea to add chile to Cheetos. He experimented by adding spices like paprika, cayenne pepper, tajin, and many other things. What he didn’t know is that just by adding those simple things, he would create a world-wide favorite treat.

Flash forward twenty years later – Richard Montanez’s net worth is over one million dollars. Talk about rags to riches. Who knew that adding spicy things to cheesy chips would make you a millionaire?

So next time you’re snacking on some Flamin’ Hot Cheetos think about their eccentric past and how maybe you can be the next millionaire.
