Disney is a company that is made for child’s entertainment, it has made great films that have applied to many. Every film is presented with happy characters and all around a good ending, right? Wrong. Disney has been known to take a real life event and modify it to please certain age groups, but have you really looked into the event’s past?

For example, the movie “Pocahontas” is a family based movie that almost every kid loves. But when you look into the real story, you will find that Pocahontas was only 11 when she met 28 year-old, John Smith, the future love of her life. She also had no clothing on every time she met with him until she reached the age of 12 when she finally started wearing a dress. Creepy, right?

Another example is the beloved movie, “Sleeping Beauty.” This movie has been recreated so many times, it’s hard to keep track. The public just loves it so much. But do they know what actually happened, how it’s based on a real-life story? While the innocent princess, Aurora, is sleeping, her prince sneaks into her room and has his way with her while she’s unconscious. Keep in mind she is only 16 at the time, and Prince Philip is 20.

Not to mention Princess Jasmine, Ariel, Mulan, and Belle are all 16 or younger, and are married to or in a relationship with an 18 or 21 year-old man. And Princess Jasmine, in the beginning of the story was almost forced to marry 48 year-old, Jafar.

So what is Disney promoting? Underage, pedophilic relationships? What does this tell kids? They might think, “I shouldn’t have to worry about finding the love of my life, he’s probably 20 years older than me.”

18 year olds can get in trouble with the child’s parents and can actually go to jail if one of the parents reports him or her for statutory rape. The age of consent is 18, so if a 20 year-old is preying on a 16 year-old child, the parents have every right to file charges against the adult.

People might argue that these movies were made when it was acceptable for an adult to marry a child, but all these movies were made in modern times. For example, “Aladdin” was made in 1992 and “Mulan” was made in 1998. Are those people saying that during this time period it was okay for a 14 year-old to marry?

Disney could’ve at least changed the ages to make them more similar, they’ve changed other things about the real event’s past. For instance, in “Pocahontas” Disney made changes to their ages so why not the other movies? It seem like Disney isn’t being consistent about their changes. So what do you believe, is Disney promoting underage relationships or are they just minor details?
