Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Hate?

It’s in the First Amendment that U.S. citizens should have the right to freedom of speech, expression, religion, press, and assembly. But are those rights really just excuses to spread hate? There really aren’t limits to what you can say besides saying anything that will cause panic or danger towards mass crowds, and you can’t give up top-secret information about your country. You also may want to watch what you say in certain places because you might get kicked out, but other than that there is a wide range of words that can be expressed freely.

Most people argue that there should be some limitations, and I for one agree. You shouldn’t be allowed to speak about or spread hate about one’s race, religion, or opinions because if you think about it, it’s kind of going against the Constitution itself. That’s probably why the U.S. is popular for being the “Bully Country,” because it says it will protect its citizens but then at the same time allow its own citizens to hurt each other. Where’s the sense in that?

I understand that people will be people, and everyone can’t be the happy, suburban citizen all the time, but that still isn’t an excuse to insult others based on what they were naturally born with. A person can’t control if they’re Middle Eastern or African American, and they can’t change the fact that they’re Muslim or Christian. So when some prestigious person comes stomping in just to spread their hate because they think they’re superior over others, that hurts the U.S. When a person gets bullied to a point where they can’t take it, they give up. That bullied person will move or tell others to be warned if you’re moving there because you might be bullied as well. More and more people will think lowly of the U.S, due to the bad image of some of its people.

It’s horrific to think that some people can’t live their own lives due to other people’s hate. If this is the Land of the Free, why can’t people be free to express themselves without being in fear of someone judging them? Even if there are laws protecting people’s right, some just chose not to follow them, persistently argue, and cause havoc.

I feel like the U.S. should do something about this, there should be certain words or phrases that just aren’t okay to say. It’s 2017, as a society we should be over these racial, homophobic, and anti-religious terms. If someone is different than you, you should just accept that. Accept that everyone is not going to be the same and that there is diversity in the world.
But honestly, I don’t know how long we’re going to last as a society when all most of us do is spread hate. Something should change before it’s too late, before something serious happens. Before riots break out and our country separates as a whole. Because, how are we ever supposed to unite when there’s always that group that threatens it?
